on a journey
where nature's whispers echo through time and terrain, beckoning explorers to traverse its timeless
pathways.
Day One
Our excursion from Anakiwa to Davis Bay and back offered a serene interlude amid the tranquil landscapes of
New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds. Departing from the conventional paths of the Link Pathway, our
impromptu journey was spurred by the luxury of time following our settlement at Anakiwa 401, a cozy
self-catering guesthouse that beckoned us to explore the surrounding natural beauty.
Having previously traversed the Davis Bay to Anakiwa trail as part of our Queen Charlotte expedition, we
embarked on this familiar route with a sense of anticipation, eager to reconnect with the picturesque vistas
and soothing rhythms of the wilderness. The trail, adorned with verdant beech forests, unfolded before us
with effortless grace, offering a gentle respite from the demands of modern life.
As we meandered along the well-trodden path, the tranquil ambiance of the forest enveloped us, providing a
sanctuary of serenity away from the bustling world beyond. Our journey culminated at Davis Bay, where the
shimmering waters of the Sound welcomed us with their crystalline embrace. The campsite nestled amidst the
verdant foliage offered a tranquil oasis, complete with a pristine swimming beach that invited us to immerse
ourselves in its refreshing waters.
Yet, our idyllic reverie was punctuated by the persistent presence of sandflies, whose unwelcome attentions
hastened our departure from the bay. Retracing our steps back to Anakiwa, we found solace in the azure
depths of the local beach, where the cool waters offered respite from the lingering warmth of the afternoon
sun.
Upon our return, we embraced the simple pleasures of camaraderie and culinary delight, relishing in the
shared experience of preparing a modest meal together. Our senses attuned to the symphony of nature that
surrounded us, we found contentment in the simple joys of fellowship and exploration.
Day Two
Setting off from the Grove Arm Jetty car park, we embarked on our walk, greeted by the promise of scenic vistas and seaside serenity. The track, running alongside Queen Charlotte Drive, offered a picturesque backdrop of coastal charm, with the gentle lull of waves accompanying our footsteps. Passing the Aussie Bay Campsite, nestled amidst lush foliage and facing the sea, we couldn't help but envision the allure of a peaceful retreat in nature's embrace. The campsite exuded a sense of tranquility, inviting weary travelers to linger and savor the coastal ambiance, especially for those equipped with off-road caravans seeking a temporary haven. Our journey led us onward to the Momorangi Camping Area, where a refreshing pit stop awaited at the camp shop, indulging in the simple pleasure of an ice cream amidst the idyllic surrounds. As we meandered through the campgrounds towards the Momorangi Forest, the intertwining of human convenience and natural splendor became apparent, offering a seamless blend of comfort and wilderness. Ascending gently uphill, we ascended to the higher reaches of the Pathway, greeted by sweeping panoramas of the sound, a testament to nature's grandeur. Arriving at Ngakuta Bay, the allure of its inviting waters beckoned, offering a rejuvenating respite from our journey. Energized and invigorated, we retraced our steps back to the car, each stride a testament to the harmony of exploration and appreciation that defined our Link Pathway adventure.
Day Three
Embarking on a segment of the Link Pathway from Ngakuta Bay to the WW II Lookout proved to be a captivating
journey through Marlborough Sounds' scenic wonders. Our day began with a short drive from Anakiwa,
where we
seamlessly transitioned from car to trail, eager to explore the natural beauty ahead.
Initially, the trail unfolded with ease, leading us away from the coast into lush landscapes punctuated by
occasional glimpses of the shimmering sea. The contrast from the previous day's walk was notable, yet
equally enchanting as the pathway unveiled panoramic vistas that stretched across the undulating terrain.
One notable pause came as we beheld the allure of Governers Bay Track, its golden beach
beckoning from a
distance, a promise of future exploration. Such moments underscored the allure of the Marlborough Sounds,
inviting further discovery beyond our current path.
As we progressed, the remnants of history intersected with the present, notably at the WW II Lookout. Once a
vigilant post against potential invaders, now a serene vantage point offering contemplative views of the
sound. The vestiges of wartime vigilance stood in stark contrast to the tranquility that now enveloped the
landscape.
With reflections on history and nature intertwined, we concluded our trek, savoring the final moments before
retracing our steps back to Anakiwa. The journey, though brief, left an indelible mark, a testament to the
timeless allure of Marlborough Sounds and the adventures that await along the Link Pathway.
Day Four
Having savored a hearty breakfast in Anakiwa, our adventure began with a
drive back towards Picton, with Kaikoura as our ultimate destination for the day.
The walk between the WW II Lookout and Picton remained the last piece of unfinished business on our
itinerary. Opting for convenience, we chose to park at Picton Harbour Lookout, marking the
starting point of
our trek.
The initial stretch of the track proved to be pleasantly easy, offering us ample opportunity to immerse
ourselves in the natural beauty surrounding us. The Shakespeare Bay Lookout, in particular,
treated us to
breathtaking vistas of Picton Harbour and the picturesque Shakespeare Bay, leaving an indelible impression
on our minds.
Traversing the boardwalk along the bay added a delightful dimension to our journey, providing moments of
tranquility amidst the coastal scenery. As we ventured further, the path led us through verdant forests,
gently ascending towards Whenuanui Bay. The serene ambiance of the forest enveloped us, offering a serene
backdrop to our leisurely stroll.
Upon reaching the WW II Lookout, a sense of fulfillment washed over us, knowing that we had completed this
leg of the Link Pathway. With memories of the lookout fresh in our minds from the previous day's encounter,
we retraced our steps back to our awaiting vehicle.
In reflection, the walk from Picton to the WW II Lookout epitomized the essence of leisurely exploration,
offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and accessible pathways. Each step along the route provided an
opportunity to reconnect with nature and appreciate the coastal splendor that defines this region. As we
concluded our walk, we departed with a sense of satisfaction, knowing that we had experienced a memorable
segment of the Link Pathway journey.
